Skills to Foster™ – Foster carer training course
This mandatory training course is completed during your assessment to become an approved foster carer with us. It has been designed to prepare prospective foster carers for the world of fostering, focusing on key areas including; the role of foster carers, identity and life chances, working with others, and safer caring among other topics.
Child Protection & Safeguarding – Foster carer training course
This mandatory training course is aimed at giving foster carers an understanding of child abuse, the signs and symptoms, managing disclosures, and procedures. The course has been designed to encourage carers to focus on safe practice, policies and procedures, and how to manage the impact on the child and their own family.
First Aid – Foster carer training course
It’s important foster carers know what to do in case of a medical emergency. This mandatory foster carer training course has been designed to equip foster carers with the knowledge and confidence to deal with situations where first aid is required.
Recording, Logging and Data Protection – Foster carer training course
This mandatory foster carer training course is designed to encourage foster carers to think about the best way to record and log events. Foster carers will learn about the importance of logging and recording for the child’s future reference, but also to ensure the quick escalation of urgent and important information to us, and the local authority. The course also covers the Data Protection Act 1998, and the importance of it.
Managing Behaviour Effectively – Foster carer training course
Some foster children will have experienced past traumatic events; which can lead to some feeling hurt, angry and scared. It’s important foster carers are able to identify, understand and manage the behaviour of these children effectively. This foster carer training course has been designed to explore the underlying reasons why some children present these challenging behaviours; and will discuss behaviour management strategies and techniques that carers can use.
Safer Caring – Foster carer training course
This foster carer training course will help carers understand the need for health and safety policies and procedures. It will explore the use of risk assessments as a tool for the effective caring of challenging children, managing risks, and promoting positive health and development.
Foster carers have an important job. Foster carers need to feel knowledgeable, and confident in their role – because we believe knowledgeable and confident foster carers are best placed to help build brighter futures for fostered children. Our foster carer training package is aimed at empowering our carers, and developing their skills so they feel they have the confidence, and the knowledge to make a real positive difference.
Can I choose which foster carer training courses I attend?
Our foster carer training programme contains both mandatory, core subjects and voluntary courses. Whilst you don’t have to attend our voluntary courses, we would encourage you to, as they offer an excellent opportunity to develop your skills, practice and knowledge.
How many foster carer training courses can I attend?
Providing you have completed your core training, you are free to enroll on our voluntary foster carer training courses as you please.
When are the foster carer training courses run?
Our foster carer training courses are run throughout the year by qualified and experienced trainers. Some of the courses can also be accessed online.
Are the courses accredited?
Yes. We are an accredited learning centre so all of our foster carer training courses have been independently assessed and accredited. There are also some courses that are externally regulated, and hold a professional qualification status.
