What is short break fostering?

What is short break fostering? - Simply, short break fostering is a type of fostering placement that offers respite to a child's current carers. Short break fostering placements last for a short period of time, usually only for a few days but they can last for around two weeks.

Short break foster care can be required for a number of reasons. For example, a 'full time' foster carer may have urgent family commitments, or a particular situation may arise with the child's birth parents which mean they are unable to care for the child temporarily as they normal would. In other circumstances, short break fostering placements are planned in advance.

Children who require short break fostering may have a disability or other additional need which means their parents, or other carers may benefit from a break. Crucially, short break foster care placements encourage and promote the long term stability of the child's normal foster placement or home; by providing an opportunity for the family to have a short period of rest.

Children are aware that the short break foster placement will only be for a short period of time, and that they will be returning to their usual home afterwards. Many children who are placed in short break fostering placements often view their respite fostering placement as a holiday or adventure.

Short break or respite foster care is extremely important to the long term stability of some families and fostering placements. Short break fostering gives these families a much-needed opportunity to recharge their batteries. As a result, these families feel more able to cope with the children in their care; giving them the best possible chance of staying together.

As a short break foster carer, you’d offer a valuable lifeline to the whole family; ensuring the support is there when they need it most. What’s nice is that we usually find local foster carers in the same network support each other with respite care, which helps children stay with a family they become to know. Our short break foster carers all receive the very best in foster carer training; ensuring they are always kept up to date with the latest training opportunities and much more.

How do I become a short break (respite) foster carer?

If you are thinking of becoming a short break foster carer with us, the first thing you need to do is get in touch with our friendly fostering team for an informal chat. You can call them on 0121 352 1844. They will be able to answer all of your questions an explain the next steps.

Are short break foster carers paid?

Yes – At DMR Services we believe in rewarding all of our foster carers with a generous fostering allowance. The UK Government is responsible for setting the minimum fostering allowance rates each April, with amounts relative to a child’s age and needs. Currently, the minimum allowance is between £123 and £216 per week. At DMR Fostering Services, we will always ensure our short break or respite foster carers are paid at least £376 per week for each child in their care.

Do short break foster carers receive training?

Absolutely. It’s important that we ensure all of our foster carers are appropriately trained, and feel able to fulfill their roles with confidence. That’s why we place an importance on foster carer training. As an accredited learning centre, we are able to train our foster carers directly; ensuring access to the latest training opportunities throughout their fostering career.
