Foster carer application process

The fostering process takes between three and six months to complete; but this varies between applications. The fostering process is completed in stages, but many of these stages can be completed at the same time as one another, so the process can be very quick. Many prospective foster carers say the fostering process goes quickly because there is so much going on.

Our fostering application process will require us to ask you a range of fostering assessment questions. Some of these fostering assessment questions will relate to your childhood and past relationships, work history, your health and any personal interests among others.

All prospective foster carers will need to complete a foster carer medical assessment with their GP. There are no medical conditions that automatically exclude people from becoming foster carers; but we do need to make sure there is no serious medical condition that could inhibit your ability to look after a child safely.

The Skills to Foster™ course has been designed to give detailed insight into the world of fostering; focusing on a number of key areas including identity and life chances, working with others, and safer caring among other topics.
